Innovocean, new laboratory and offices for maritime research
InnovOcean will be the new sustainable basis for maritime research in Ostend. In this bustling coastal city an architectural landmark with international appeal will be created. Here the VLIZ (Flemish Institute for the Sea) and the ILVO (Institute for Agriculture and Fisheries Research) will get their home. Various laboratories with studio space and technical areas will be combined with offices with meeting rooms, an auditorium and a sea library. It will be an efficiently functioning building with pleasant workplaces for no less than 200 employees.
International appeal
The architectural design distinguishes itself by the cut-out of the covered and double-height roof terrace on the top floor of the office tower, with beautiful views of the coastal city.
The theme of sea and water is also reflected in the choice of materials. A blue glass mosaic is provided along the outside. This special material is mainly made of quartz sand. Not only the colour, but also the smoothness and the refraction of light of the facade refer to the climatic colour shades and changing conditions that are just different (more explicit, brighter) on the coast than in the interior. It will be a building that will express the poetry of wind, water, sun and clouds.
The colour palette of floors and carpentry refers to the white/yellow/gold of sea sand, an ubiquitous material in the region. The building wants to add a positive visual value to its surroundings.
Opportunity for the coastal city
InnovOcean will be an integral sustainable landmark in the Lighthouse District and will form an important new link in the urban fabric.

From the preliminary consultation with the advisory authorities, through the elaboration of the right strategy in the procedure and the drawing up of the environmental permit application, to specific advice on the elaboration of the environmental obligations in the construction phase.
